On a Serious Note...

Before I write this newest verbosity down, I'd like to thank Steve for deciding to set his bar higher, but also wanting to let him know that what he's doing now is still vastly more entertaining than many other things. But on that note, I was inspired by recent news to go off on a topic of actual importance above my favourite sports or pop culture...

Apparently our fearless new leader, Herr Harper as we've taken to calling him, has decided to echo a policy of the American government dating back to the Vietnam War and earlier. This is, of course, forbidding Media from showing coffins of Canadian soldiers being taken off of airplanes as their remains are brought home for burial (if they're lucky enough to have their bodies recovered). I'm going to come out and say that I completely disagree with this, and I find it offensive. Before I launch into why, I want to admit that yes, some have said its respectful to the families, but I would counter by saying its disrespectful to the dead. In fact, the majority of families of servicemen/women who have been killed overseas in the Afghan/Iraq spheres, have said that they are not offended by the coffins being shown coming off planes.

My big problem with this criminally moronic idea, is that, being a student of history (as one of my readers is as well) it reminds me far too much of the LBJ/Nixon era when the bodies were just being unloaded off of the transport planes non-stop. But if the American public were not seeing this, then the War campaign could be pushed harder and harder, and more and more young lives could be sent off to be wasted. So perhaps Mr. Harper thinks that if we don't see the coffins being unloaded out of the back of Hercules planes, that we won't notice...out of sight out of mind.

Are we supposed to simply think 'oh well I don't see any dead Canadian soldiers being flown home, so I guess there aren't any, and none are dying'? Does he think we are that stupid? I honestly hope not, or at least that he doesn't think that the majority of us are at least. I think it is a dishonour to the memory of each and every soldier killed if they do NOT show us. We should see it, not because we want to, but because we NEED to see that even though we are no military power, far from it, that we still do have people dying because Mr. Harper (and his predecessors) have sent them away to do so. Soldiers are technically employees of Canada, and are doing their jobs, but it becomes far easier to let us be immune to the realities if the government starts to avert us from such truths.

I am not trying to say that if we don't see a coffin draped in a Maple Leaf carried out of the back of a plane that democracy is over. I'm not that naive or black and white about things. I just think it is a slippery slope. If you bear with me: for every person who only watches TV news in this country, if there are no longer images of such sad events, then perhaps the mind doesn't remain conscious of the fact that there are still armed conflicts going on all around. I don't think in this country its as important, but in the US, by trying to avert people from that, they are trying to keep up enrollments in the Armed Services. This I will also attribute to the average intelligence of an American not being as high as a Canadian.

I seem to be rambling and this is not a convincing paper, I know I wouldn't give myself good marks. But this is just a blog, so its mostly stream of consciousness and stuff that comes to me. Take it as it comes. If I can boil down my argument its like this: I think every Canadian solider killed in action or whatever it is called deserves the flags to be at half mast (I neglected to talk about that part of Harper's decisions but thats how it is) Canadian soldiers are, as I said earlier, Canadian employees, and what does it say about an employer who won't even give you the respect afforded normally to the dead? I also think that there is nothing wrong with showing coffins coming home, because it drives home many points: there ARE Canadians dying, War does still happen even for peacekeepers like us, We cannot become numb to the fact that those are all each individual lives snuffed out, when it seems like Mr Harper wants us to forget it, and move along. I think that is far more disrespectful than showing coffins coming home.

So thats my somewhat jumbled and wordy assesment of the topic.
The second prong of this conversation is the involvement of the Media in the equation...
I don't think that the media has the "right" to be there showing us all of these things, but I think they have an obligation to show the average person images and information.
I think that the media uproar about Harper's decisions may in fact, sadly, be more about their own loss of coverage than of any more noble caring. I would hope to be proven wrong, but I'm not that naive. I also think the media likes to toot its own horn and talk about how important they are in all facets of life, and I think they feel like the PM isn't playing the game with them, and they're irked about it. No matter what you or I think about the various military 'skirmishes' or the politics behind it, lets not lose sight that its not about the media, Harper, or even what I think, its about what we do every Nov 11th...REMEMBER. I just hope in the aftermath of all this, that Canadians don't lose sight of the fact that each one of those coffins represents another fellow Canadian who died trying to make the world a safer/better place.

As usual I welcome feedback/comments/criticisms, because otherwise its just a glorified Diary, and thats kinda sad.

A Hockey one

Well I'm glad that one's over. My heart and blood pressure can NOT handle a seesaw game like that. If you know me well then you will of course know that I am referring to the Habs/Canes game tonight. I didn't catch the first game, but to say surprised at 6-1 WIN would be an understatement. So needless to say I was a little more amped up for this one than I otherwise would have been.
Well one period in and a 3-0 lead makes for a big sigh of relief/contentment but then of course you realise this is the 3rd highest scoring team in the league, and even without Erik Cole they scare.
3-0,3-4,5-4,5-5, double overtime the Neuf hero.
Whew.
As I've grown up watching hockey, I have to admit I grew up thinking that every call the ref made was right if it was for my team and wrong otherwise. I must say I'm glad I'm no longer at that stage, but I've definitely been in the company of some who cannot make that claim. Tonight I'll be honest, I didn't want to win on a PPG in OT, thats just somewhat sour. But I would have taken it.
In regards to penalties, I have to agree with Cherry, that Doug Weight was crying like a baby the whole game to get calls, and as per his analogy, this ain't soccer. Something about American born players just irks me. Speaking of irk, I also think that Rod Brind'Amour might be the elder statesman for ugly in the NHL now. Yuck.
I've been a Habs fan most of my days that I can at least recall, as my dad wasn't a huge sports nut, but had respect for the great teams, so I grew up on the Habs, not the Leafs. That being said, I still also have a soft spot in my heart for the Oil, since one of my earliest sports related memories is being allowed to stay up until...10 O'Clock!!!! to watch Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers in what was probably the 87 playoffs, but either way it was a special occasion to be allowed to stay up late.
So I can also justify it by saying one is in each Conference, and I don't see them play often. But if push came to shove no contest its the Habs. I must agree with Steve's point about cheering the Canadian teams out of patriotism does seem rather shallow, although I'll be the first to admit I was definitely like that in days gone by. However, I could not EVER cheer for the Leafs, as a bitter rival. that being said, cheering the Sens is non excusable either. The only time you cheer for them is if they're playing someone who has a higher ranking hatred in your heart, a la axis of Evil Steveo style. My particular AoE being Philly, Dallas, Carolina, and whoever Jeremy Roenick is playing for at that time. Coincidentally these are also 3 of the NFL teams I hate the most.
Wow this has been a rambling entry, but I do have another comment to make...
Being a fan, there are always some bums on your team that have some talent but still make u pull out your hair.
In my case its Mike Ribero. CAN NOT STAND THAT TWERP. good word twerp. not used enough.
Fuck he could not hit the side of a barn with a guided missle the way he was shooting it tonight.
Should have put the game away a number of times. Also can't stand his smirky face, and I don't honestly get that upset if he gets plastered. Too bad we have to play him.
anyhow thats it for the rambling, gimme some feedback on the bums you love to hate on your own team(s). that would make for an interesting discussion...

and yes that would still have been an amazing game even if we lost. but not as good.

PS. sucks to be a Philly Fan.

april showers bring rain. its that simple people

Once again apologies for letting it slide 2+ weeks between entries but I really haven't been in touch with my muse so to speak, and anything I would have written would have been utter crap, and well maybe its not that different from what I usually spew out, but I like to pretend that I have some shred of accountability to the few people who read this, and as such I won't subject you to crappy pap.

Is it just me or when the fuck did it become April? Hell I still remember February, but maybe thats because March flew by in a whirl. I won't bore you with details of work, but needless to say its been either super busy in the office or super dead on the floor. Which makes it tiring no matter which one you're subjected to.

You know, maybe I don't actually have anything to write about...I guess its just one of those "I'll feel better if I get something written down" feelings. The great thing about April however, is that it means Spring isnt that far away, but in Kingston, April seems to be the new month for SNOW. Of course we couldn't have snow during the actual winter, but hit April and then lets just have a dumping of it. Also seems like it wasn't April showers this year but March showers, which is why we have April Flowers instead of May, but the snow seems to be killing those April flowers so we might have May Deadflowers...

Anyhow, the other things I'm looking forward to are the coming of warmer weather (eventually) the beginning of the paddling and camping season, as well as the new concert season of which I plan to make a few more appearances, including at Steve's beloved Pearl Jam, who I by the way am also a devotee of, but feel that I am not even close to the level of committment he shows. I've only been to 2 shows in 5 yrs of theirs, but loved both, and now I have the chance to make it 2 shows in a little over 7 months. (as opposed to steves 7 shows in 6 days heroics).

Also want to give a belated shout out to Jeremiah Joseph, Burner, JJ Clutch and all the other nicknames Sage gave himself, as he hit the big 2-6 one day before Gulley did. April 4 that is. Once I find some decent pictures I'll be posting them on here as well, seeing as how that's something I've never done.

April also brings something back long missing from my life...the playoffs! What a joy it will be to have no Maple Leafs in to hear about, but still be able to cheer the real team, les Habitants. Also think I oughta go see a game, it is about time to pop my NHL cherry. (Yes I Gavin have NOT been to an NHL game before - shock and awe and disgust from Steve soon to come my way yes I deserve it) I know Jared you've been wanting to go so maybe we'll road trip it to the MTL or even *gasp* OTT? (but no that doesn't make me a Sens fan Steve, I'd never do that to a good friend).

So pretty much what I'm saying is that I tend to hibernate in winter much like the Ursus Major that I tend to resemble in attitude as well (a grumpy bear that wants a nap, to some of you non-Latin speaking peeps). So April will hopefull let me wake up and get going and maybe also keeping a better handle on this blog so I don't lose the few of you that actually take the time to check it out (thanks by the way, my wee ego does like that little boost when I know someone has actually read it, but comments help too!)

So in closing, thanks for the faith, and once I work at this I'll get some of your links up there too.

Cheers, Keep it Real homies.
